Stephen Kiprotich 2012 Olympic Marathon Champion

Finished Stephen Kiprotich
Watching Matt complete this painting was really interesting. After watching Kiprotich win the Olympic marathon during the London games was unlike any other marathon I had seen. He took it out fast in the very beginning, and never looked back. He actually did look back, seemingly wondering where his competition was.
Working on the finishing touches
Matt was much the same way with this project. It is the largest painting he has done to date, and he had to build the canvas unlike any other canvas. The rolls of canvas he buys were simply not large enough for this great runner, so he put together two canvases seamlessly. Then it was the task of stretching this grand canvas. Again, Matt just put his head down, and got it done! When it came to sketching, and painting Matt did most of the piece standing up, and only angled the piece when completing the bottom of the composition.
I have to tell you I thought he was done with the painting about two weeks before it's completion because it just seemed like it was all done. Over those two weeks I was able to see the detail work Matt put into this photo real portrait. He took much time in outlining the kneeling Kiprotich in the foreground to make him literally pop off the canvas, and give the painting much more dimension. The details on his singlet were also worked on at the very end. I am amazed at the amount of time put into this project, and the fine detail work done on it. Watch the slideshow here to see the progress.
