Art is always a reflection of our lives and values. Over the summer Cristina and I made it over to the Big Island to spend time exploring Hawai'i National Park. Being the home of the fire goddess Pele and part of a rain forest makes the Puna District of Hawai'i a dynamic and intriguing spot. Our plan was to hike, hike, eat, sleep, then hike, and hike. On our list was the green sand beach on south point, watching lava enter the ocean, and to get as close to Pele as we could. Hiking to see Pu'u O'o and nightly visits to see lava splatter at Kilauea Crater were highlights. I made a series of videos sharing these journeys. Once back in the studio I started the painting of Pele above. Inspired by our hike on Napau Crater Trail, a hike that took us past steaming lava fields and along the rim of Makaophui Crater. The colorful Tiki followed as an experiment of Hawai'ian themes with many of the colors we experienced while in Volcano.
